Back Bay Youth Rugby

The Back Bay Youth Rugby Club was first established in the fall of 2004 with only a few kids that wanted to play rugby. At our very first practice, we only had 7 players but by our first match we had 14 players. We won that first game, and many more since then.  Our league has grown from 14 players to over 200 boy and girl youth players.

We are now competing in all youth Southern California divisions from U8 to U18. Our players come from Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Westminister, Irvine, Santa Ana and other cities throughout Orange County to play with us. We have over 20 dedicated coaches on staff, all certified by USA Rugby and background checked. Many of our coaches have also competed at high levels of rugby in Australia, New Zealand, England, Wales and the United States.

BUILDING CHARACTER THROUGH COMMUNITY

The most important lesson in our club is to teach love and respect for the rugby game. Although rugby is physical and competitive sport, the heart of the game has always been about two teams coming together to play as hard as they can. Through the game, we celebrate and honor the match, and of course, the sport itself.

After each match, the home team provides hospitality to all of the visiting teams. This is a chance for all the teams to hang out and socialize. This hospitality and sense of community is what separates rugby from any other sports. The demonstration of mutual respect and camaraderie after every match builds confidence, strength, and integrity in our youth. Our main purpose is to help in the growth and development of youth players. As such, our club upholds and teaches our core values to our players.

CLUB VALUES

TEAMWORK

There is no "I" in team. We welcome players of all levels and skill sets and teach our youth to work together as a team. We teach selfless play - working for the team, not ourselves. We encourage this on and off the field and teach our youth to take pride in their team, whether they win or lose.

ENJOYMENT

Enjoyment and fun is the reason we all play rugby. Our coaches work hard to make practices and games enjoyable. Rugby is a great sport for teaching our youth how to have a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

SPORTSMANSHIP

Respect and camaraderie are the ideals that rugby was built on. We teach our youth fair play and dignity in every aspect of life. We play to win, but teach them how to praise the achievements of opponents.

RESPECT

Mutual respect is the basis of rugby. This includes respect for your teammates, opponents, match officials and supporters. Our coaches enforce mutual respect at all practices and games.

DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH

We encourage growth and development in all areas. We set goals as a team and push our youth to set individual goals. This is essential for building confidence and attaining success later in life. Our coaches support and help our players attain their goals, on or off the field.
